An update on John’s words

  • Posted on March 13, 2012 at 9:19 am

I posted a list of his first words almost a year ago: http://therickabys.com/blog/2011/05/30/johns-becoming-a-little-talker/ But I thought an update would be good. He actually talks pretty much constantly at home even though he’ll hardly say a peep around anybody else. There’s no way to list all of his words, but here are a few of the phrases he’s been using lately.

  • Me do it.
  • How do dat? (used when he wants to understand how to work just about anything)
  • Mines (even though he’s using it wrong, he does seem to have picked up on adding an “s” to the end of words to make them possessive)
  • Go innit.
  • Turn light on. (or off)
  • Right day. (right there)
  • Chamee. (change me)
  • See Moogie, see Poogie. (every time we’re getting ready to go to church)
  • Mommyup! (we’re not sure exactly what this one means. He says it over and over when he’s upset, but not necessarily when he wants to be picked up. I’m open to suggestions.)

He’ll try to repeat just about anything we say, especially Megan. Last week I was changing a poopie diaper and I said to him “oh, you must have eaten something green” and he said “somefing geen.”

So Busy

Let’s see, it’s not quite lunch time and John…

  • Pulled my new phone out of my pocket, put it in the box is came in and said “safe”
  • FiguredĀ  out how to unlock the phone and screamed for five minutes when I took it away. I asked him if it broke his heart and he said “yes.”
  • Played with his “phone” and put it in the case I have for mine.
  • Disassembled the fort I built for him.
  • Insisted on having the light off.
  • Sat in my lap, bumping my arm around so I can’t click the mouse on anything I want. Apparently this is quite funny.
  • Figured out how to use the remote to stop and play the CD player.
  • Pretended to sleep in Mommy and Daddy’s bed.
  • Harassed the cat.
  • Poked around in Megan’s room.
  • Played the piano.
  • Found a set of 3D glasses that came in a magazine a while ago.
  • Played with Matt’s pinpressions (one of these things)
  • Carried his step stool all over the house to check things out.
  • Pulled everything out of a drawer in the bathroom.
  • Found his yogurt bowl from snack on the kitchen counter and smeared yogurt all over his face.
  • Tried playing with the coffee pot.
  • Gave himself an ice shower from the refrigerator’s icemaker. Came and told me “ice come out”. Well, yeah, it does that.

And now he’s running around the house with an old set of keys. I’m exhausted just being in the same house with him.

Something my Grandma probably didn’t have to deal with…

I had a conversation with Megan last week that I’m betting the majority of our grandparents didn’t have to have with their six-year-olds.

We were reading her Sabbath school lesson one evening. It was about creation and we were pointing out that God had created a “Mom” and a “Dad” to be the parents of everyone in the world. She said “Well, sometimes there are two moms.” (She used to go to daycare with a boy who had two moms.) So I said as matter-of-fact as I could, “Yes, sometimes that happens. And sometimes there are two dads.” She looked like she thought that was very strange.

I’m still not clear on WHAT she’s supposed to do to it…

Translation

  • Posted on September 30, 2011 at 2:16 pm

From his crib: “Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma… ma ma… ma ma… ma ma… ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma… da da… da da… ma ma… ma ma… ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma…”

Translation: “Oh Mother Dearest, I have awakened from my afternoon slumber. Would you or Father be so kind as to release me from the place of my imprisonment?”

On another note… we were coming home after buying some chore prizes for Megan from the dollar store and she suddenly and mater-of-factly said from the back seat: “Oh, this was made in China.”

He GETS It!

We have a little toy house that came with three blocks. A baby, a mommy and a daddy. They fit in the top of this house and when you push the block in, it sings a little song depending on which one you put in. The baby one sings a song that ends with “shhh… baby’s sleeping.” At that point John took it out and put it in his bed. Then found a stuffed animal to put in there with it.

A little bit later I wrapped his baby doll up in a blanket and he put it in his crib too.

New house rule…

“No, you can’t do math until you’ve eaten your dinner and practiced your piano.”

Megan’s First Day of School!

  • Posted on August 23, 2011 at 9:29 am

Megan had her first day at school yesterday. She had lots of fun and met friends, but she can’t remember their names. Made friends with a girl that *gasp* didn’t want to play princess! Somebody didn’t like her glasses, but it doesn’t bother her. When Moogie asked if she learned anything new, she said “no, we talked about the letter M, but I already know that.” There was apparently also an older boy who played ball with her for a little while at after-school care. It’s interesting the little snippets of the day that we hear about.

When we first got there and Megan found her assigned place at the table in the class room, John climbed up in the seat across from her as though he was going to stay too. He was not happy that he had to leave, but we went to the park on the way home and he was ok. By the end of the day he was very anxious to see Megan and Daddy.

I think Megan missed John a lot, after greeting him she gave him a big fall-down-on-the-floor hug.

She’s been holding out on us!

Our church is doing a summer day-camp sort of thing called Summer Exporations, but it’s in the evenings from 5-8:30 with dinner included, so working parents can participate. It’s been really fun for Megan.

Last night I heard something interesting from one of the volunteers… Apparently Megan won a Who Can Be Quiet Longest contest… Both Matt and I said “OUR Megan???” I tried that in the car once and she didn’t even make it for 30 seconds!

I think you missed a few…

Megan’s been excited to learn how to count to 100. While reviewing a first grade workbook (which she finished in a month with little instruction from us!) Matt was explaining thousands, millions, billions and so on to her.

Yesterday on the way home from daycare, she counted to 100, then continued: “101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109… 1000! 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, 1006, 1007, 1008, 1009, 1 MILLION!” Then went on that way to billion, trillion and zillion.

“Um… Megan, I think you missed a few numbers.”
